The Part 3 - The Test of Your Ability to Instruct

Part 3 of the driving instructor training test is also practical test, which lasts an hour and is conducted in certain designated Driving Test Centres in all regions. It is conducted by the examiner using role play acting as your pupil. It is divided into two parts, one with a pupil in the early stages of learning and one with a pupil near test standard. Once you have explained the subject to the pupil you will be expected to spot mistakes they make, explain the reasons behind them and suggest how to correct them. You must come across as friendly, patient, knowledgeable and understanding. The object of the exam is to assess the quality of your instruction and your ability to pass on your knowledge to all types of pupil.

Training Offered

The Part 3 is without doubt the most involved of the three exams and will need the most tuition and studying. Lynne will base the studying around her own book 'Pass Part Three' (please refer to the review and comments under 'Publications'), and if you complete Parts 1 and 2 with the establishment, the book and prompt cards are free.

The training will commence with sessions to introduce you to the skills you will need to instruct your pupils e.g. giving route directions; assessing and correcting driving faults; lesson planning; giving brief explanations of subjects to pupils on all the lessons you would be expected to teach; and role play situations. The training sessions are on a one to one basis and the number of hours needed depend on your ability to impart knowledge and skills. Mock tests will be arranged and you will feel ready to take Part 3 when you are entered for it.
