‘The ADI Theory Training Course’ by Matthew Stone
Review by Lynne Barrie, MA Driver Training

As a trainer of PDIs I welcome a book that encourages them to research their work in order to pass the Part 1 exam. In my opinion, far too many PDIs learn the answers to the question bank through repetition and in a rush. They are desperate to move on to the Parts 2 and 3. The Part 1 should be a solid foundation for those next exams: anyone using this training book correctly will have achieved that goal. Often in helping to rescue a PDI during Part 3 training, I find gaps in their knowledge and understanding of topics: using this book would help to avoid that.
When the question bank is removed from the public domain in January 2012, this book will clearly be essential in preparing for the Part 1. It can be used by individual PDIs or by larger training establishments that have not yet developed a theory training package for next year. The book is not new rather this is a revised and improved edition. The author began by using it at his own training establishment and it has now been used by many other ORDIT registered training companies over the past five years. It has been successfully used on many ORDIT inspections in that time including those I took part in.
Matthew has listened to the feedback from ADI trainers who asked if they could have a generic version with their own company name and details on the front cover. This is something that has now been done, so the guide to all intents and purposes looks like it was produced by those trainers themselves with no reference to any other company.
Should the company or trainer require a completely different front cover designed by them, then that is available if Matthew is supplied with the artwork.
The book is excellent value for money priced at £39.50 and £5.00 post + packing. Delivery is estimated at 3 to 4 days. It is spiral bound, uses good quality paper and is clearly set out in a format that is easy to understand. The book takes away the chore of having to research which books to use to study Part 1 and where to find all the relevant study pages. It guides you to the information you need thus allowing the PDI more time for the learning process. It has a section on how to structure your study and helpful information about the hazard perception test. It then moves through each of the 4 bands of learning necessary for the Part 1 exam.
I do feel that this book will need to be updated on a regular basis as the titles it suggests are themselves regularly updated by the DSA. The author assures me this will be the case.
