Driving Instructor Training | Part 1: Theory Test

The Part 1: The Theory Test

The driving instructor Part 1 test is conducted in the Theory Test Centres based in most major towns. It is a computer based exam using a touchscreen system designed to be easy to use. The theory test demands a high standard of knowledge and consists of 100 questions taken from a bank of 900 questions. For each question a choice of four answers is given of which only one is correct. You have 90 minutes to complete the test. The questions are on subjects ranging from The Highway Code, road safety, car control, basic mechanics and instructional techniques. The questions are banded into 4 main areas and you will need to gain an overall pass mark of 85% but also reach a minimum of 80% in each of the four areas.

After a short break you will then move onto the Hazard Perception Test. This must be passed on the same day. You will be shown a tutorial video after which you will see 14 video clips featuring various types of hazard. You will respond by pressing the mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing which may result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. You can score up to five marks on each hazard and there are 15 hazards to score in total. You will need to gain 55 out of a possible 75 marks to pass.

Both the theory and hazard perception elements must be passed on the same attempt.

Training Offered

There are many publications and CD-ROMs available to help you and it is quite feasible to study for the Part 1 on your own within your own timetable and at a low cost.

The entire bank of questions is available from Lynne or from the DSA. If you don't have a computer on which to practise, then Lynne can provide a laptop for use during tuition sessions.

Whilst you are studying for your Part 1 you will be in full contact with Lynne so that help and advice can be given. Theory lessons can be arranged if you need extra help and Lynne will help you decide when you are fully prepared to take your Part 1 exam and how to apply for it.
