Learner Driver Lessons | The Theory Test

The multiple choice element of the learner driver theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions and lasts for 60 minutes. To pass, 43 of these questions must be answered correctly. You select your answers simply by touching the screen. The touch screen system has been designed to be easy to use. The screens are easy to read and only one question will appear at a time. You will be able to move backwards and forwards through the questions, and you will also be able to flag questions that you want to come back to later. It is easy to change your answer. Some questions ask you to select more than one answer and the system will alert you if you need to select more answers.

A hazard perception element, consisting of a series of 15 video clips, is also included. After the multiple choice element there will be an optional break before the hazard perception element begins. The hazard perception element will be introduced by a short tutorial video that explains how the test works and shows you a sample clip. You will be shown a series of driving scenes seen from the driver's point of view. Each clip contains one or more hazards filmed in a variety of different situations. You should respond by pressing the button as soon as you see a hazard developing. To pass this element you must score at least 44 out of 75.

How well do you know your theory?

As a learner driver you must pass the theory test before you can book a practical test. Understanding driving theory, safety matters and current regulations is necessary before taking the practical test. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) strongly recommends taking practical lessons at the same time as preparing for the theory test.
The theory test covers:

  • Driver attitude and awareness.
  • Traffic signs and regulations.
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs and tiredness.
  • Safety and the environmental aspects of vehicles.
  • Accident and document procedures.
