Learner Driver Lessons | The Practical Test

The first part of the Learner Driver Practical Test is an eyesight test. You must satisfy your examiner that, in good daylight, you can read a vehicle number plate at a minimum distance of 20.5m (67ft).

If you need glasses or contact lenses to read the number plate, that is fine. However you must wear them during the test and whenever you drive. If you fail the eyesight test the practical test will go no further.

The Learner Driver Practical Driving test lasts for approximately 40 minutes. The test includes two manoeuvres out of a possible four, maybe an emergency stop and all types of driving including faster flowing roads and dual carriageways. Driving faults are counted and making above 15 will result in failure; any serious or dangerous fault will also result in failure. There is also the 'show me, tell me' section of the driving test; this includes two questions on basic car maintenance. This will be covered during your practical lessons.

When you take your practical test you will have already completed two or three mock tests during your driving lessons if you would like to. This will make you feel ready and capable to deal with the situation on the day and ease your nerves.
